This weekís look at the Reel Web, YouTube is experimenting with yet another homepage
layout, and theyíre making some updates to automatic transcriptions for your videos and
a whole lot more, unusually more than normal. This week on the Reel Web.
Hey guys, my name is Tim Schmoyer and welcome to another week of the Reel Web where every
week we just highlight some of the online video news for you guys from the week before
and this week thereís a lot happening at YouTube. It feels like we go through these
stretches of nothing, and then boom! Like everything comes out at once.
But before we get into all those changes at YouTube, I first of all want to remind you
guys that myself and Mark Robertson, our founder here at Reel SEO, both of us are going to
be at VidCon in two weeks. We are excited to meet as many of you guys as possible. You
guys have been leaving comments and produced videos. Those of you who are going to be there,
let us know, itís going to be awesome. Weíre going to try to get as many interviews and
shoot as many videos with as many of you as possible. So if youíre going to be there,
please let us know. And just a heads-up for those of us who are YouTube creators and marketers,
YouTube will officially be onsite doing their own workshops and programs, and you can even
meet with them, someone from the YouTube team, one-on-one, to talk about your channel and
get issues resolved and talk about stuff. Theyíll be doing lots of training. So if
you want stuff straight from YouTube, VidCon is the place to be in Anaheim, California
in two weeks. So, hopefully, weíll see you there and get to talk with YouTube for those
of you who wonít be there.
Speaking of YouTube, they are playing around with some new design changes to the homepage
of YouTube.com. I know they just underwent like some major revisions that were met with
a lot of controversy, but theyíre learning some lessons and saying, hey, weíre going
to try to experiment with something different, see what you like, and itís very reminiscent
of Google +. So, if you like the design and layout behind Google +, you might like the
new design layout behind YouTube. It looks a little bit like this. Youíll notice on
the left side bar, it now lists all your subscriptions, and you can see the number of recent videos
that are available from each subscription that maybe you havenít watched yet. Thereís
also a search box that lets you find a subscription, and the side bar no longer includes popular
YouTube categories and suggested channels. Those are now displayed below your subscriptions
in a scrolling list.
Youíll also notice that your videos are taking up much more space in the feed, because the
thumbnails are huge. And the new interface also lets you hide videos from the feed, which
is something that used to be available previously on YouTube, and itís something that theyíre
obviously bringing back. Another change would be that after youíve watched the video, there
will be a watched label over top of the thumbnail image indicating, hey, youíve already watched
this video, you donít need to watch it again. If youíd like to play around with the new
look and experiment with it a little bit, thereís a link in the description below this
video here on YouTube, or at ReelSEO.com, where you can go and follow the directions
that YouTube gives you on how to activate the new layouts, and just play and see what
you think. And after you play with it, please comment below and let me know what you think
about it. What other things have you noticed that maybe are pretty important that were
overlooked, maybe eliminated, and things that theyíve added that you think are really cool.
Comment below and let me know what you think. That would be awesome. It would be helpful
for me too, because I havenít had a chance to look at it yet.
Another thing that YouTube talked about last week, which has actually been around for a
little bit now, but theyíre just now talking about it, and that is the new drop-down menu
from your video manager lets you now promote your videos to a wider audience than people
on YouTube. This is basically just a shortcut to getting your video in Googleís AdWords
campaign to kind of promote it, but it is a little easier and it shows you very nicely
how many views you can expect to get from the budget youíre giving, and it just makes
it easier to kind of promote your videos if you donít want to go through the whole traditional
AdWords campaign video thing. If you ever get that special video that you really just
want to promote and get a lot of eyes on it, and youíve got some extra moolah to do that,
now itís much easier for you to give your cash over to Google for them to promote your
video for you.
Thereís a link down below that will give you more information about how to promote
your video and how the whole process works on YouTube, but they also cite a couple of
examples of people who have paid to promote their videos, and in so doing, have built
quite a substantial audience. I donít know how much those creators paid in order to build
those audiences, but it works, so if you want to try it out, there you go.
Another little update thatís actually been a long time coming, is that YouTube now automatically
creates caption files for Spanish videos. Theyíve been doing it for English for a long
time, but with the very popular rapid growth of YouTube in Spanish-speaking countries,
especially in South America, itís about time they get this onboard. To view or create Spanish
content, now your job just got about ten times easier. Of course, whether you speak English
or Spanish, you still want to go back in and just edit those caption files that Google
creates, because it is automatic and they get a lot of things wrong, so make sure you
just go back and double-check them, and then you should be good to go.
One of the ways YouTube is trying to make online video viewing more social is by making
their Google + hangouts more technically integrated with YouTube. One of the ways theyíre doing
that is giving you ways to hang out and have a party with your friends at a Google hangout
where you can all watch videos together. The way it works is pretty simple. You get into
a Google + hangout with all of your friends, you all add the YouTube app to that hangout,
and then you can all contribute different videos that youíd like to watch together
as a group. You can give out reprimands that people who keep adding the ten-hour long nine
cat video, or you can compliment and give props to people who are contributing good
videos to your playlist that youíre watching together. I think YouTube is thinking, hey,
people watch TV together all the time, and even if youíre watching it alone, chances
are pretty good youíre sitting on an iPad or a computer or your phone, texting or posting
about the show youíre watching with your friends. And theyíre thinking, well, you
just sit around and actually do it, like face-to-face kind of, in a Google + hangout.
Just really quickly, a couple of other links that I think you guys should really check
out. Iíll put them below this video. One is twenty-two tips for your storytelling creativity,
was written by one of the storyboard artists at Pixar Studios. These tips are really, really
good. I love them. Perhaps my favorite one is number fourteen that says why must you
tell this story? Whatís the belief burning within you that this story feeds off of. Thatís
the heart of it.
Another link down there that was particularly interesting to me is from All Things D, and
they talk about how there was no Apple TV announcement at last weekís WWDC. But they
take the liberty to read between the lines a little bit and say, actually, it looks like
Apple TV is in front of us and we didnít even know it. Very intriguing article linked
up below. Go check that one out if youíre interested in Apple TVís, you know, we cracked
the code on TV stuff.
