Welcome to a screencast of digital abrasion Today this video is about Apple Mac OS X Lion Dev PreviewÉ
The developer preview came out yesterday so this is just a short walkthrough
Mac OS X is without the best OS for consumers
in terms of security, user friendliness and the features and value you get for the price is really very goodÉ
The next version of Mac OS X is Lion, the current version is Snow Leopard.
So this is just a developer preview, it's for developers to test their apps before the launch of the complete OS this (2011) summer.
You can find all the details of what's new on the Apple website so I won't go over that in too much details, just going to show you some highlights and mainly some visual UI changesÉ
I installed Lion on an external HDD and my main system is Snow Leopard
É this is a very good feature of Mac OS X that you can install it on virtually any mediumÉ even USB Thumb Drives!
Let me jump right into the video, don't want to explain all the technical stuffÉ I am using an Apple Magic Mouse now.
With touch, I can not only scroll up down as I normally would but also can scroll to the sides and change between screensÉ so this is a very nice new featureÉ
Before you had to use keyboard shortcuts to switch between screens. It seems that the multitouch gestures have been integrated better on this version.
I was quite excited to test out the new Mail 5. It has been completely revamped. It's now more like the Mail in iOS, especially like on the iPad.
Things like list view and the inbox layout etc. pretty much resembles the iPad version of mail.
On Lion, one feature has been highlighted which is "Fullscreen Mode", especially all Apple software have this mode.
You can just click on the fullscreen icon in the corner and take out all other distractions. It still keeps all the compatibility and integration.
You can also switch back to normal at any timeÉ
Another feature which seems to be very interesting is "Launchpad".
This is very much like the iOS Homescreen where you can have a glance at all your AppsÉ
I don't have too many Apps here as this is a fresh installation but in my main system I do andÉ
you can group apps just like iOS into folders. You can rename them and drag around to set where you feel right.
Launchpad also has all the smooth scrolling as expectedÉ
Another interesting feature is "Mission Control". It's pretty much like ExposŽ which exists now. But this is more organised. Let me open another window.
Here I can have a complete overview of all the programs running and the windows open and they are also grouped so it's easy to spot and find what you are looking forÉ
If you go to System Preferences, you will see "Internet Accounts" which I find to be very usefulÉ
This is nice because I can sign in with an account, in this case my Google account and I can easily switch on the services for the account. Very nice integration.
If I want to add a new account, I just have to give in the credentials and that's all.
Unlike the traditional approach, now you don't have to go to each application and setup mail, then setup calendar and instant messagingÉ
I can add most of the popular services like MS Exchange accounts, MobileMe or others, and all I have to do is sign in once. So it's really something that I liked.
Safari is now updated to version 5. What I love about this isÉ
É the native support for Bangla language. Even on windows it's not as good as on the Mac.
The default fonts shipped with windows are simply crap and compared to that, the Mac fonts are stunning. Apple leads the market when it comes to font rendering.
This is also why you will always see Magazine Publishers and Publishers in general always use Macs for any sort of publishing workÉ
But in case of Bangla, Ekushey.org who developed the fonts, no offence to them, messed up all the time.
But now it's more like iOS, it comes right out of the box! No need to install any extra fonts or whatsoeverÉ
And if I choose to, I can of course install additional fonts and allÉ no problem at all.
It really feels nice to see the smooth Bangla text being renderedÉ really happy about it!
I was quite sure that this would happen because in Snow Leopard, Bangla was pretty good and with the 4.0 update for iOS also on the iPad the rendering was flawless so I did assume Apple would do something about the Mac OS.
There aren't so many Bangla Mac users out there but still Apple taking care of such details just show the dedication to their work. And I really find that to be cool.
So that's actually it. I just wanted to give a short sneak peak to the new system. Please let me know in the comments below what you would like to see next and if you have questions. According to that I'll plan my future videos. Thanks for watching.
