Kim Brown, English BA (Hons) Literature. The campus is very accessible, being so close
to town, it’s a nice friendly campus, everyone seems to be having a good time. There’s
always something going on on campus as well, so that’s good. The tutors are very good.
They’re very approachable, they’re experts in their field, they’re still publishing
and that’s a really good thing for us as it gives us something
to aspire to and look up to. I’m really impressed with how enthusiastic and how passionate
they are about their topic. You leave every seminar feeling as
if you’ve been challenged and that you’ve learnt something new and different. The best
thing about my course is the ability to debate with fellow people on my course, challenge
each other’s opinions, topics, ideas and thoughts. I did
a work placement at a local high school teaching secondary English one day a week as part of
a module that was required for our second year of our course.
It’s important to get the hands on experience for me personally, as I’m applying to be
a teacher and one of the applications is that you have to have classroom experience, a minimum
of two weeks. Those of us who have done this course and have chosen to do that work placement,
we’re ahead of the field in that we’re going to have between 180-200 hours which
is six weeks plus of experience. So that’s given us good stead, because it’s
a very competitive field. My experience at Huddersfield has been a challenging one, but
an exciting one at the same time. It was a big decision for me to come to Huddersfield
and come to University later in life as a mature student, to change my life and I don’t
regret my decision one bit.
