This is the National Weather Service in Elko here to bring you a weather brief for an upcoming
winter storm taking shape out in the Pacific Northwest. There are still some minor discrepancies
between the computer solutions, so confidence is about 70% at this time.
The latest satellite image from this morning shows an area of low pressure over Washington
state. The low will dive south and move into Northern Nevada on Monday, Bringing cold and
wet weather with gusty winds and a good chance of rain and snow.
Here is the latest surface forecast for Monday evening. The area of low pressure is expected
to be over extreme Northeast Nevada. The cold front will be pushing east into Utah. Behind
the cold front rain will change to snow in many areas as snow levels drop to 5000-6000
feet by Tuesday morning. Here is a map of the projected snow fall amounts
for this storm. The area of heaviest snow fall is anticipated to be in Northern Elko,
Southern Lander, and Southern Eureka counties.
Winter weather advisories and warnings are in effect for portions of the area. The potential
hazards from this winter storm include areas of moderate to heavy snow Monday evening through
Tuesday morning. The greatest chances for this to occur will be in Lander, Eureka, White
Pine counties and portions of Elko county. Expect snow accumulations of 1-5 inches above
5500 feet with higher amounts in the mountains. Some locations below 5500 feet like Elko,
may see up to an inch of snowfall.
The impacts from the snow include sharp reductions of visibilities to 1 mile or less and slippery
roads. Major towns like Elko, Spring Creek, Eureka and Ely could see these conditions
during Tuesday morning commute. Roadways affected include portions of Interstate 80, Mountain
City Highway, US Highway 50, and US Highway 93. If you are traveling on any of these roadways,
please use caution, plan an alternate route or allow for extra travel time due to the
possibility of this winter storm .
Winter weather advisories and warnings are in effect for portions of the area. A winter
storm is expected to impact areas of northern and central Nevada Monday through Tuesday.
Moderate to heavy snow will create hazardous driving along area roadways. Reduced visibilities
and slippery conditions are possible with this upcoming winter storm. The worst impacts
are expected around Elko, Spring Creek, Eureka, and Ely during the Tuesday morning commute.
