Over the last five years, through the creation of the
Bonner Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement,
Carson Newman College has made service learning
a defining characteristic of its campus community.
Over 75% of the student body is engaged in service
with over 40% contributing more than 10 hours per month.
Located in Jefferson County, an Appalachian community,
economic development and education initiatives are
sorely in need.
Bonner scholars act as community liaisons and drive
service participation on campus
through a number of programs like BOOST
which reduces recidivism
in at-risk elementary and high school youth.
