"Jane's first volunteer event!"
[instrumental guitar music]
Hi, I'm Katie Wood, I work for AmeriCorps.
I'm an AmeriCorps volunteer. My site is at the zoo,
and I am the zoo crew coordinator there,
I manage the teenage volunteers. We're cleaning
up the park right now, our team is working on
Pleasure Lake, which is not so pleasurable, it's
kind of disgusting actually. So we're picking up
a lot of stuff in the water and outside the water.
This is important because there are so many people
who enjoy Roger Williams and we really want them
to continue to be able to enjoy it without all
this trash cluttering it up.

Hi, so my name is Peng Xiong, I am with the Providence
Hmong Church. We are doing a 30 hour famine right
now, we are fasting for 30 hours. We are going
without food and doing community service, so we
decided to come here at this time just to help our
community, help Roger Williams Park, clean up, pick
up trash. The whole purpose of us doing the famine
is to raise awareness, raise funds for children overseas
who suffer from hunger, or poverty and diseases.
Because we all grew up here in Providence, this is
our park. We've been here since we were young. So,
you know, it's a chance for us to come and clean up
our big park.
We've been fasting for thirty hours just to see what
it's like in third world countries. And to come do
something like this means a lot, just to see that
we can make this a more beautiful place.

And I just think for people to come, maybe if they see it
clean, they won't throw their beer bottles in there
anymore. But, I don't know. But I think that it's
important for things to look nice this time of year.

I think that just everyone coming together from
different groups shows the support of the community
and how much people care about the environment.
I'm out here because it's great to get out in the community
with other community members and clean up a park
in Providence. It's a really great spot and an
awesome way to spend a Saturday morning.
