Hello. Our today's topic is 90mm macro lens from Tamron. We will go in details, talk about
features, specifications, where and how to use this lens.
Like the name suggests, it is a macro lens and the main use for it would be macro shooting.
This lens has two good features for macro work. First you can quickly switch from AF
to MF with the help of focussing ring. We can trust autofocus or switch quickly over and
use manual focus for fine-tuning. Second good feature is this switch on the side.
It enables the lens to focus in full range or macro only. This means that if we shoot in
macro range, let's focus the lens to macro. This window shows whether we have 1:1
magnification or less; now if I turn this switch to "limit" position, the lens can
only be focussed in macro range. It makes focussing on small objects faster and more
precise because the full AF range is quite long and can take some time.
Although the lens has auto focus, manual focus gives the best results in macro work.
This in turn needs a smoothly moving focussing ring with travel long enough for minute
adjustments. This way we can focus with extreme precision and capture beautiful shots.
In manual focus mode we can shoot multiple frames without the camera AF hunting.
The focus limiter switch comes here handy as well. The focus range is limited to macro range
at the moment. Now, if we need to move back a couple of inches,
we are no longer in macro range and we can not focus on the subject.
Now we can switch quickly back to full focus range to focus on the subject.
If we exit the macro mode so to speak, select normal focus range and now turn the limiter
switch, the lens limits focussing to normal range only. Focus movement is nice and short
but now in the normal focus range. 90mm is a focal length ideally suited for
portrait work, too. Now, if the focus range is long, focussing on the subject can take
some time and effort. This limiter switch makes the focus range considerably shorter
so you can use this lens as it were a 50mm standard prime.
This lens has a very soft background and bokeh, just like a macro lens should.
Basically, anything in the background at any distance is nicely soft and
unrecognizable. The background is pleasantly soft and uniform which
puts the emphasis on the subject being captured.
This is it. The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro lens. Like I said, main features are smooth and
long focus movement, fast switching between manual and auto focus, focus limiter switch
depending on what we shoot, close or normal range, makes AF substantially faster.
Nice especially soft bokeh with fast open apertures
and of course image sharpness, specific to macro lenses.
I will continue playing now. I suggest you do the same.
I meant taking images.
