In this video, I'll be showing you how to restart the management agents for the ESX hosts.
These steps work in ESX 3, ESX 3.5, and ESX 4.
The agents handle all mangement communication to and from the ESX hosts.
Before restarting the agents, we want to ensure that automatic startup and shutdown of virtual machines is disabled.
Otherwise your virtual machines might reboot.
Log into your VirtualCenter Server and choose your host.
Click the Configuration tab
Click Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown
and click Properties.
Ensure "Allow virtual machines to start and stop automatically with the system" is not selected
and click OK.
Log into your ESX host as a root user
you can do this using an SSH client
or directly from the console of the server
We're using an SSH client.
Type "service mgmt-vmware restart" and press enter.
Type "service vmware-vpxa restart" and press enter.
Both services have now been restarted.
You see the "OK" fields on the screen.
If you happen to experience issues restarting
check out 1003561 for troubleshooting information about the mgmt service
and 1006128 for the VirtualCenter agent service.
