Good morning! My name is Jeff Kitsmiller and I am a meteorologist for the National Weather
Service in Missoula. The following is the Fire Weather Briefing for Monday, April 22nd.
The impressive winter storm that passed over the weekend brought widespread rain and snow
to north central Idaho and western Montana. Liquid water amounts ranged from about 0.25-0.75
inches in western Montana and around 0.10-0.30 inches in north central Idaho. Most of Idaho
missed out on the snow accumulations but much of western Montana received accumulating snow,
especially in west central Montana where 5-12 inches of snow fell yesterday.
Snow showers will linger in southwest Montana and eastern Idaho early today but will decrease
through the morning. Sunshine will return in most locations by this afternoon which
will help low elevation snow to begin to melt. Cool northeasterly winds will remain with
highs around 10-15 degrees below average. Tuesday morning will start off cold but highs
will begin a warming trend. By the end of the week high temperatures will return to
the 60s. Majority of the week looks fairly dry, especially in north central Idaho, but
cloud cover will increase on Tuesday with showers possible Tuesday afternoon mainly
in western Montana. Expect diurnal west and northwest winds each afternoon from Tuesday
onward. If you have any questions or comments, please
feel free to contact us at the National Weather Service any time.
