You know when you ask people how much we give to foreign aid, they say 25 percent. When
you ask them how much it should be, they think it’s 5 percent. And then, they’re surprised
it’s only 1 percent, which is why we’re here, talking about the importance of this
1 percent and the profound difference it makes in people’s lives around the world. The
fact that it’s, you know, one of the most moral and valuable investments that we make.
The power of 1 percent to me is the pride of being an American taxpayer and the generosity
that it represents. For me the power of the 1 percent is I like
to think my tax dollars are going to represent women’s health issues across the world.
One percent means that people’s lives can be better. That we can improve some of the
inequalities in the world and that people that need opportunities can have those opportunities
to realize their full potential. The power of 1 percent to me is youth who
have the ability to make change within their community and make the world a better place.
We can actually make sure that America around the world is providing opportunities to those
young people that link them in to a global economy and ultimately that’s something
that can make us safer and stronger economically. It is thousands times more return. Because
there is no amount of money or percentage of budgets that you can allocate to human
life. It’s such a small number, but uh, I mean,
the impact that 1 percent has is, is so great. We can save lives. We can protect borders.
And we can create stronger economies. The power of 1 percent.
The power of 1 percent. The power of 1 percent.
Ninety-nine percent potential.
