wayfaring stranger
this world of woe
started with me and Alexi
busking on the street corner,
so it's rooted in just, folk.
together after we got married
to make some extra money.
We were broke, and still are--
but we'd tell people busking,
we could try that.
From his side
I'll never roam.
of ever writing a song,
and we had no intention of ever
performing and having a band.
and I in the beginning,
it was a very specific sound,
it was very simple,
and then we started
bringing in other players
as we worked on
different records. (Channy)
a specific sound,
and so that's why it
can be hard for us to say
we're folk, we're rock,
because each song is like ooh,
these lyrics really deserve
this sort of treatment.
And so we're still
finding out our sound,
and it changes
with every song.
where we looked at each song
and said okay, this song
maybe could have drums,
this song could have banjo,
you know, you name it,
and so that's pretty much how
we transformed into a full band.
to Pine Ridge
pull up to Porcupine
Say yeah, here I am
I'm ready to fight (Channy)
before we got married.
maybe best is strong.
We were very good friends.
And um... just kidding...
both laugh
So we love making
music together,
not because it's a romantic
experience for us
we respect each other,
and we like what we
do with each other's songs.
Light the match
Oh, fan the flame
I won't be tamed
between Channy and I
electric guitar.
it's like,
is there a great harmony vocal?
a banjo part for Mike?
Can you hear horns on this?
Just kind of taking it
song-by-song case, you know.
(Channy)
It is very organic
and kind of a collage
of everybody's influences.
I think when we build songs,
does this have a good groove?
Does this make us want to dance?
Is it showing off some voices,
and is it telling a story?
Battle cry
Though the sky
It calls me
I'm ready to die
Seems like the good things
outweigh the challenges.
But there's definitely lots
of times where I'll be like
I just don't think we should
be in the same band anymore.
do my own thing,
maybe that'll happen someday.
And it's not like
we get in lots of fights.
It's just funny, when he
makes a comment
about how I'm doing something,
it bothers me.
Whereas, if anybody
else says something,
I'm like oh, that's a good idea.
sing this differently
or I don't know
about those lyrics
I'm like, wait a second--
this is my thing.
(Alexi)
bandmate... spouse.
it really is, it's--
but it's cool because I think
we've both watched each other
grow a lot over the years
as artists.
beat
Oh I work so hard
Nearly every day
I break my back
To put money away
Just you wait
I'm gonna leave this place
Before I die
Now, there is a place
Is a place
In my love's arms
love's arms
How it keeps me safe,
yeah, yeah, yeah
And far from harm
from harm
And it's in that place
I'm gonna spend some time
Before I die
Now, you say you're worried
Say you're worried
About your dirty past
dirty past
Oh I say it's harder
Always lookin' back
Always
lookin' back
But you gotta be free
From all that
Before you die
Oh I have joy
And I have peace
peace
Forget this world
its greed
And all its greed
I left it all
to be redeemed
Before I die
Will you take me home
take me there
Give him my burdens
And all my cares
Oh precious savior
Will you take my soul
When I die
Oh I work so hard
Work so hard
Nearly every day
Every day
And I break my back
To put the money away
Put the money away
But just you wait
I'm gonna leave this place
yeah, yeah, yeah
Before I die
yeah, yeah, yeah
Before I die
