My name is Muneebah, I’ve been living here for twelve years. My issue is the police,
for them to be more involved in the neighborhood, I believe they need to walk the neighborhoods
and learn the people in the neighborhoods, you know, so they can know who they are, you
know what I’m saying, they could know who they are. And then walk in and solicit the
kids into their programs, into the police programs that hey have there, so the people
would know them, would know the precincts, some of the officers, and if they have problems
or something like that they can go to certain officers to see who they want to deal with
certain issues. Stop and frisk, I don’t appreciate stop and frisk, really, because
I have a mentally retarded son that the police have stopped in my neighborhood and frisked
him and almost took him into the police car for something they thought he was doing. My
son carries a soda in a bag and they said he threw away drugs. My son is 18 years old
he doesn’t do drugs, he doesn’t even know how to sell drugs. If it wasn’t for one
of my neighbors to come run out and tell the police this boy ain’t got sense none to
sell no drugs, then I would be picking him up at the precinct. And another thing, I was
going to the neighborhood precinct and let them know who my son is, that he’s not a
drug dealer and that he’s mentally retarded and that you need to leave him alone. You
know? Because I felt like he was a target after a while, you know? The kids in this
neighborhood have to walk around with IDs, and at one time the police from the precinct
they came through writing down all the kids ID numbers from their ID cards. My son called
me up one day, ‘ma they writing down our IDs” They had a line of boys in the neighborhood,
right down the street, a line of boys, at least 12 boys, 12 to 13 boys writing out their
identification. What kind of freedom that is in the neighborhood? Why do the police
got to know the boys in the neighborhood like that? You know? So they doing a lot of things,
they’re not letting us know what they doing it for, all they’re saying is that they’re
an authority and you must follow these rules. I don’t appreciate that. We need to have
some type of understanding. If the police come in the neighborhood with their authority
doing what they want to do, I’ve seen police beat up kids right in their neighborhood,
right in their neighborhood.
