Unfortunately, we don't have a very good treatment for dry AMD.
We do, however, know of something that will decrease the risk of progressing to advanced disease.
We know that there is a special formulation of eye vitamins
called the AREDS II formulation that's available over the counter and
taking these vitamins
has been shown to decrease your risk of progression to advanced disease by as
much as 25 percent.
So we usually recommend that all of our patients take this AREDS II
formulation of vitamins.
In addition, we also sometimes recommend nutritional supplements of lutein
and zeaxanthin because these have been shown to promote
retinal health. For wet AMD, however, we have
a treatment that involves injecting medication into the eye.
These medications are called anti-VEGF medications and they work
a little bit like weed killer does. They make those blood vessels shrink away so
that your retina can reabsorb the fluid and the blood.
They work really well and, in many patients,
they can not only maintain their vision, but most of our patients will actually
gain vision with the use of these medications.
