On Wednesday, a Mississippi judge extended an order to keep the state\'92s only abortion
clinic open. The injunction counters a law passed in April requiring abortion doctors
to be certified OB-GYNs and have privileges to admit patients at local hospitals unless
they perform less than 10 abortions a month. Fox News had this report:\kerning1\expnd2\expndtw10

to have 14 abortion providers in the '80s. But if the Jackson Women\'92s Health Organization
closes, the nearest abortion clinics would be at least 200 miles away in Alabama, Louisiana
or Tennessee.\kerning1\expnd2\expndtw10 \uc0\u8232 \u8232 \kerning1\expnd0\expndtw0
The Jackson Women's Health Organization says their doctors are OB-GYNs and they have already
applied for privileges at nearby hospitals but without success. Despite trying to comply
with the new law, the abortion clinic still argues it is unnecessary. HLN reports even
the state\'92s own health department says the clinic does a very good job taking care
of its patients:\kerning1\expnd2\expndtw10 \uc0\u8232 \u8232 {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK

\uc0\u8232 \u8232 \kerning1\expnd0\expndtw0 Based on the 1992 Supreme Court ruling in
Planned Parenthood v. Casey, states can regulate abortion clinics but can\'92t put undue burdens
or obstacles in the path of women wanting an abortion. George W. Bush-appointed U.S.
District Judge Daniel Jordan had initially issued an injunction on July 1 and is now
considering whether the Mississippi law violates that ruling. Proponents of the law such as
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant insist the law is meant to protect women\'92s health, but
MSNBC\'92s Al Sharpton played this clip to argue the contrary:\kerning1\expnd2\expndtw10

We\'92re going to continue to try to work to end abortion in Mississippi, and this is
an historic day to begin that process.\'94 \b0 \kerning1\expnd2\expndtw10

\'93This isn't just about the 20th state in the Union. If the judge eventually lifts the
injunction to the law, it may present the blueprint that conservative lawmakers use
in the other 49 in an effort to outlaw all abortions.\'94

As of yet, there is no news of when Judge Jordan might give his final ruling on the
Mississippi law.\ }
