Captain Phil Butt.
I joined the Defence Force because I wanted a career
where I'd be able to travel, receive a good income, and
work in a team environment.
And I guess I chose the Army for the opportunity to get to
attend the [? institutional ?] at Duntroon.
I did the 18-month course at Duntroon, first six months
preparing me to attend the final year with the graduating

academy/
I'm a medical corps general service officer.
My role is to provide the operational and logistic
support to field hospitals of various sizes and
capabilities.
In barracks, leading a recruit training platoon at Kapooka.
And operationally, deploying as the military assistant to
Commander Sector West in East Timor.
[INAUDIBLE]
abou t 2,000 people, where I had a role as a linguist and
the assistant to the commander.
I've been fortunate to attend the Australian Defence Force
School of Languages in Laverton, Victoria, where I
studied Bahasa Indonesia for 40 weeks, and also studied Tok
Pisin for 40 weeks, the language
from Papua New Guinea.
I value it extremely highly.
It's a great honour to lead Australian troops, who are
pound for pound the best troops in the world.
I believe it's prepared me extremely well.
It's laid the foundation.
Already in five weeks, I've probably experienced four or
five different things which we trained for at Duntroon.
Just to be able to reestablish the health service,
particularly in a public hospital, where the people,
being public patients, probably didn't have the
access to this type of care before.
And just rebuilding that has been excellent.
Just speaking to them.
I know that they are very happy and very grateful for
what the Australian Defence Force has done, and I don't
think they want us to go.
