>> JOHN: My name is John Lockman, and I’m a high performance computing specialist in
the performance architecture group here at TACC. Primarly, in my job, I help researchers
run their simulations codes on our large systems. I also teach courses at the University in
… introduction to programming courses. I remember convincing my parents to make them
buy a computer when I was, I don’t know, maybe 6 or 7. And just fought them tooth and
nail, “You need to bring one home!” So that’s always been a passion for me, computing,
and I’ve always loved sciences. And what’s really cool here is that we build and deploy
these large systems that help researchers change the world. I mean, how cool is that?
You may catch me juggling here in the office while I’m waiting for my code to compile.
Occasionally a code can take anywhere from a couple of seconds to several minutes. Yeah,
if it’s a 5 minute compile, you might see some clubs or balls being thrown around in
here. A really big bonus of working here is there are so many interesting people, completely
different disciplines. We have researchers here from all across the scope of science.
