In Northeastern Mindanao, there are schools within NPA platoons that provide literacy to unprivileged comrades.

NPA SCHOOL
Before we start class,
let us sing our favorite song
The party is much stronger now
Compared to when it began
Only a handful of people rose up again
Faced danger and hardship
The few have now become thousands...
Today we resume
Comrade Jean, Teacher
our classes in literacy/numeracy.
It is in the program of the platoon, held every Wednesday and Saturday.
We have nine students.
The lesson for today is 'feudalism'.
As it contains letters we still have to learn.
Comrade Argee, did he give the right answer?
You are right, comrade
"Feudalism," the word that Darwin said, let's write it down
Look over here, focus your eyes at this...
These students here are at level 1.
As it happens, we have levels 0, 1 and 2.
Those at level 0 are still unable to recognize letters
Those at level 1 can read two-syllable words like "mama" and "papa"
Those at level 2 involves mastery.
which includes learning to read faster
Most of them are quiet when classes start.
But because of the exercises that we do here, the comrades learn and they become eager to study.
Most of the students are Lumad.
One difficulty is that they get bored easily and often have headaches.
But they really try hard.
They sometimes fall asleep on the table or bench, but they go back to listening and studying.
There are problems in writing, sometimes the letters get written the wrong way.
But positively, the comrades are really diligent and open to learning.
Literacy and numeracy are included in the program of the platoon
to help the comrades learn how to read, write and compute.
This is will of use in carrying out their daily tasks.
and increase their perseverance in the struggle.
because it is only here that they experience liberating education.
What have I learned from literacy school?
Comrade Mike, Student
It has helped me
and I am glad that I could now read and write.
I have become more enthusiastic
and will persevere in the revolution because of the literacy I have achieved.
The Filipino people have grown tired of hearing for three years...
Only a handful of people rose up again
Faced danger and hardship
The few have now become thousands...
