[Intro music]
>> CY: My attitude is if I can do it, you can do it. Yeah.
>> GREG: When I looked in the mirror one day, and I had this little roll around my belly,
something clicked in me, and I just went, "I can't do this."
>> CHERIE: In everybody's life there are junctures, there are moments that happen,
and you can either go this direction or that direction.
>> MARGARET: What was I think, 75 when I first started.
>> Male athlete: You just gotta start somewhere.
>> Male athlete: Just start immediately. Find something you think you might be interested
in doing.
>> CHERIE: I went out and I bought a book called "How to Run Your 1st Marathon."
I bought a pair of shoes. And I went out for ten minutes and ran. And that's how it started.
>> MARGARET: But you can't expect to be what these others have been doing for years.
You're just starting out.
>> GREG: I just remember the first day going out of my apartment down in Palm Springs and
heading out for my first run and literally getting a half of block and having to stop
and bend over and ya know, I could barely breathe.
>> BOBBIE: Just go a day at a time.
>> Male athlete: Walk from one mailbox to the other one, and then stop. And the next
day walk a little further. And then next day a little further. And then by starting, that's
the hardest part. Do something. And then pretty soon you're going to feel a little bit better,
a little bit better.
>> ALISON: You learn it, in baby steps.
>> MARGARET: You'd be surprised what little you can do, makes you feel good.
>> GREG: Well from that came a mile, then five miles, and then 10 miles, and then 20
miles, and then a marathon...
>> Female athlete: Walking and fitness classes, anybody can do it. It's just getting in
and getting involved.
>> CHERIE: The path that I was headed until I was in my...40s. If I would have kept
on that path, I would never have known, I'd had died never knowing I had this ability.
And, how many other people, are in that same situation.
>> Group of females athletes: Just gotta get out there and take that first step.
>> Male athlete: Get a good checkout from the doctor. Start a walking program. Walking,
if you can jog... go to the YMCA. I do it all the time. Fitness center. But just stay
involved. And the more you do it, the more you're able to do it, and the more fun it
becomes.
>> Male athlete: It's never too late, to begin.
