What's going on everybody?
Welcome to today's video on pre-algebra.
My name is Jack Jenkins and this is
Academy of One. Today we're going to be talking about
the introduction to pre-algebra.
So, I want to talk a little bit about what
exactly is pre-algebra. As you guys could've
guessed, pre-algebra is everything
before algebra. So in this series we'll
talk about things such as addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division,
fractions, decimals, percentages
a whole bunch of stuff will be covered in this
series. So if you guys like this series go
ahead and please subscribe to the channel.
So this way you guys can see the series as soon as
it comes out. So I want to be covering a couple of things before
I talk more about the series. And one thing I want to be
talking about is a complaint I get alot.
Now I here this everytime I'm in a
math class from junior high, high school, college.
It's always like, why
do we have to learn math?
You know, I'm not actually going to use this in
my real life.
And, for one, I hate
that so much. Because, first off
let's be honest here, how much of what you're
going to learn in school is actually going to be used in real life?
Not alot of it right, so...
just learn math, common. Second thing is
you may actually do use this cause
If you take like electronics, computer science,
you will need this math.
And especially in pre-algebra like, you're not gonna
use addition in your life? Really? Common!
And the last point is that, while you may
not use math itself. You will use
the discipline math gives
you. So let me give you an example. It takes you
like what. Three hours to do your homework.
You're like "ugh... three more hours of doing this
monotonous homework. Why do I have to do it?
Why?" And the reason why is cause it's
instilling discipline in you.
You think you won't use the discipline of
spending hours and hours at a time on a
very specific problem?
Of course you're going to be using that. That is a
discipline that mathematics will install
in you. Another one would be, you get the problem wrong. What
do you do. You don't just go "I give up!" Throw it away.
No you look at what you done and try to figure
out the problem. And of course you will use that in
real life. I mean your relationships. "oh, girlfriends
mad. Why is she mad? Let me just look back
at what I did. Oh! I was kinda being a jerk today
guess I should stop being a jerk. Girlfriends happy.
Why do I know how do that is because mathematics
instilled that in me".
Sorry guys. I'm
just so you guys know I'm kinda a little jittery
because this is actually the fourth time I'm recording this video.
My computer keeps crashing so... If I'm a little
you guys know why. I'm sorry.
Anyways. So
let's talk more about this series.
Now Academy of One in general is starting
to change and we're doing this new format so
for now I'm like in my room, but soon I'm going to be
like on spot locations so I'll be in like
Chicago. Behind the giant
bean in Chicago. Being like. Let's talk about
multiplication. People are standing around being like
what the hell. Why is this guy so like. Yeah! Yeah! Math! Math!
Math! Math! In front of a camera. In Chicago. Behind
the bean. Why? Cause
that's cool. It will be cool
if we have like a scenic background. It will make you guys pay attention more.
and honestly, it gives me an excuse to go to
chicago so. Sorry,
I love it. Another thing is that
we're doing cut away segments in these videos.
So we'll do things such as uhm...
word up. And word up
is a segment were I say a word or a sentence like
oh. Zero is the misanthrope of
mathematics. And the little
uhm... adobe after effects
video will pop in and be like. Misanthrope
someone who hates people and the
rest of society. Misanthrope.
Bing! And that will give you guys a little
more information. The whole point of these segments is
to install more information. Cause while
math is awesome. It can get a little
boring and monotonous if we talk strait
about mathematics for twenty minutes.
So that's why we cut in these types of videos.
Uhm... another segment we have is pop quiz
which is when we add in a quiz
such as this one.

Another segment we'll have is sidetrack which is
when I'll say something like. Oh batman.
I have a batman shirt in. Sidetrack!
Then I'll cut
into a thirty second segment into
the subject. So here's like a sidetrack example of
batman.
Batman is a comic book superhero from DC.
Batman First appeared in detective comics 27
in 1939. Batman is the
identity of Bruce Wayne. A billionaire
playboy from Gothem city. His
parents were murdered as a child
so he vowed he will bring justice to
Gothem city. Do to the popularity of the Christopher Nolan
movies, batman has became an icon of modern society.
Now why do I do this? Again, is
cause a, it will help install more information in
you guys so you guys arn't just like, mathematics. You guys will be like, oh!
I learned alot about mathematics, and I also learned about the history of batman.
Cool. And another reason is
cause it will help you guys pay attention more. I mean, just
standing here watching me stand In front of my room
on the computer screen is kinda boring.
You know. So by doing it this way I can sorta
do more attention grabbing stuff for
you guys. And I'll also do pop in more pictures
and cut in more video. We're making
academy of one much more sporadic
so this way we can retain your guys attention longer
so we can teach you guys more. So, thats
what's new with the series. Another thing I should do with the series
is that the series doesn't have a specified
length. So what I mean by that is I'll keep going until
I run out of material on pre-algebra to talk about
so this may be twenty lectures. This could be thirty
lectures. Could be a hundred lectures. Who knows how many videos
This series will contain. The point is that
we're learning alot about pre-algebra
and we will continue to learn alot about pre-algebra
until I run out. Then we'll go into algebra until I run
out then we'll go into geometry, trigonometry,
calculus, differential equations. We're
trying to go on a world tour with mathematics here.
And by doing it this way we can retain your
attention span. Another thing I should talk about is that while
this is a pre-algebra course, this
is gonna go into alot more detail than your
highschool courses or college courses.
Because of the fact I'm doing it this
video format and I don't have a specified length,
I'll get into the nitty-gritty details of
mathematics. This way we can a, learn
this now so we don't have to cover it in calculus or
trigonometry or whatever have you. And
b, I got to fill up twenty minutes of time
so hence why I'm rambling. And c
more information is
always good. Always. So,
I'm going to stop this video now cause my dogs are
barking. So that's it for today's video on pre-algebra
If you guys would like. Go ahead and like
share and subscribe to this video. I'm
sorry, everyone's just waking up now. It's like
two o'clock and everyone's just waking up now.
Anyways. If you guys would like,
go ahead and visit academyofone.org and one
more thing. There is actually an article
with this video embedded. That contains a paragraph of
more information for you guys.
So go ahead and read that article. Like, share and subscribe
to the videos. Visit academyofone.org and if you have
any questions it's qa@academyofone.org.
Have a great day everyone.
