Any time someone gets admitted to the hospital, either from the emergency room, from their
doctor’s office or a transfer from another hospital, I supervise the medical team that
will be the primary team taking care of that patient while they’re here in the hospital.
I’m often rounding with residents and medical students, and so what I like to try to do
if I can is come in by myself either before our rounds or afterwards and really sit down
and get to know the patient a little bit more.
Because we see our patients day in and day out in the hospital, not in our own private
offices, there is one day when you kind of walk in and the patient just looks better
— sometimes they’ll have put their lipstick on for the first time in several days or they’ll
be smiling more — and you could just see in their face that they’re feeling more
like themselves. And, I think that for us is a really nice sign that we’ve done something
that’s made them feel better and that they’re going to be okay.
