Felicity Verdouw (Reporter): More than 67,000 people have registered with Volunteering Qld
to help with the recovery effort across the state. As the clean-up continues,
many more are offering their assistance and today we have a very special
group of volunteers who are here to help out a very special family.
The Adelaide Crows plus their support staff have taken a day off from their training camp
on the Gold Coast to make a special visit and lend a hand here in Karalee.
The Rogers family lost everything when their house was inundated by the floods. It’s
hoped that a special visit from their favourite AFL team will bring a little bit of cheer
to what has been a tough couple of weeks.
Jordan Rogers: It didn’t actually come hit our house until eleven o’clock at night
and so at that point we just tried to get as much as we could and
get out, which was only a couple of sets of clothes and all that.
Neil Craig: Well they have been strong supporters of the footy club for a long time, since day
one they tell me. So what you find of course is
that a meeting like this can actually bring a
smile to people… to their faces. Obviously they have been through a lot, and for the
family to be able to meet the players they see on TV… it gives them a bit of joy and
emphasis to keep going.
Nathan Van Berlo: It’s pretty overwhelming really, so the boys are going to lend a hand
for a few hours and I think try and clear the banks as best we can
and get some rubbish out of the way. Just seeing some of the photos that the guys here
had to show us it’s really unbelievable to
see what they have gone through in the last couple of weeks.
Brendan Barlow: As you can see a lot of the trees have been knocked down, the raft came
through today and chopped a few of them up, so we are just
bringing the smaller items up, placing them here so our trucks can come in and grab them.
The boys have been lifting up all of the tree branches and tree trunks up into a pile
up, up the top of the hill.
Sammy Martin: It’s a very warming environment at the club, so very happy to be here. Yeah,
it’s good to… I guess… be a role model… show a
little bit of initiative and help out where we can.
