What is the Ornish Diet?
The Ornish Diet is an extremely low fat diet that is combined with
yoga and meditation as well as a support group and assists dieters
in withdrawing from the use of cigarettes.
Most of the followers of this diet are actually people suffering
from heart diseases because of the low fat meals it has.
An Ornish Diet guideline requires a dieter to:
10% of calories as fat
70 to 75% of calories should be from complex carbs
15 to 20% of calories in the form of protein
Limited intake of cholesterol to no more than 5 mg per day
Consume only fruits, vegetables, whole grain, legume, bean, peas
Restricted in the diet are meat and dairy products except for egg whites, non-fat milk and non-fat yogurt
Caffeine, sugar and salt are restricted
Alcohol is allowed in moderation but is typically discouraged
Advantages
Low in fat thus promoting weight loss
Has flexible menus
No calorie counting required
Disadvantages
Hard for some people to completely give up meat in their diet
Diet may be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals because of the elimination of meat in the diet
Due to the very low fat content of the diet, hunger is often experienced
Not all people may succeed in the diet because it is restrictive and requires lifestyle changes
Dieters are required to purchase books as a main source of information since the Ornish Diet has no official website
