I'm going to demonstrate using Photoshop
to complete the assignment. First, we're going to start with an image
called toad.jpg in the resources directory
and then we're going to create three images: one with a text layer
we're going to resize an image. And then we're going to
crop the third image. So, I'm going to connect to Senna using FileZilla
And I've created a week5 and an "images" folder on my computer
and on Senna, I'm going to find the
resources directory and download
toad.jpg...The connection's a little slow
Then I'm going to go to Photoshop
and go to File - Open and locate that file
in my directory.
Alright. So...
First, we're going to add a text layer. So, to do that
you click on the
"T" right here and then you can draw a little
box and type some text
And then here's your layers
over here on the right. So when you
want to change the text, you'd make sure that the
text layer is selected over here. Then you can change the
font-size. And you could change the font
You can make the box
bigger so that it fits right
and you could change the color
and you can move it around
if you're really creative, you could create thought bubbles or other
things like that. But that's the basic idea right there
I'm going to go to File - Save for Web
and for a...
photograph you want to select jpeg
and then you can experiment with the different
options. The goal is... you want to make the image...
file size as small as possible. But you still want
good quality. So you might experiment with some of these options
but this looks pretty good to me
we can go ahead and save that and I'm going to call this one
toad1 ... and I want
...my directory here...
So, we're going to call that toad1. So, we've finished that part.
you can also save it as a PSD file
so that you can later go back and change this
text. Because when you save it as a JPG, it doesn't save this layer information.
You so you wouldn't
be able to go back and change the text. But if you have the PSD
saved, you can change it and then
resave as JPG to change the file
But I'm going to go ahead now and close this
and I'm going to open up
the original toad image again. And for this one we want to resize it. So, I'm going to
Image - Image Size. And you want to make sure that "constrain
proportions" is checked here so that it automatically scales it for you
so see when I put it to 350 for width, it
automatically puts the correct height to keep the same proportion
so you can just change one of these
and it will scale it for you. Click OK
File - Save for Web again
JPEG is selected
Going to go ahead and
save that one as toad2
Alright. So, I'm going to close that
and open up the original
toad image again. And this one, I'm going to crop
To crop, we select this tool right here
and then you draw a box for the area that you want to crop out
and you could hit Enter to make it
crop. You could crop again if you wanted to
Let's see...
...getting used to this version of Photoshop. I haven't used this version
previously. I've cropped it again
hitting Enter. I'm going to go ahead and save that
Save for Web -- then I'm going to call this one
toad3
and that's the basic idea. We have the original toad image. Then I've created
three images:
one that I have added text.
I've resized this one (scaled it) and then cropped this image
