Scott Douglas speaking: "To ask for a voter ID and ask people who don't have those things
to pay to have that is just another way of instituting a poll tax. You still have to
pay to vote. My name is Scott Douglas I'm Executive Director of Greater Birmingham Ministries.
Voter Oppression has a lot of consequences for people who don't have access to transportation
driver licenses or jobs with shifts that allow us to even go to the polls. In rural Alabama
particularly the black belt that's still people who do not drive. There are still people who
many people and unfortunately tend to be senior citizens too. Who have trouble just getting
around. Voter Suppression is a very dangerous thing because it tends to lead towards elected
bodies that are not representative of the people. And that itself has a Voter Suppressing
impact whether its planned or not. Because if government is composed of people who neither
care nor know about your situation, then the question why should I vote comes up. When
people say my vote doesn't count. Of course people I meet say ' of course it does'. But
they say ' well look at who is in office' . So what the Voter Suppressors are looking
for is a day when those who say my vote doesn't count can be telling the truth. And make a
liar out of people like me. You know well it really your vote doesn't count because
your vote has been discounted. It is had been undervalued and denied."
