On the 24th of October, a new Youth Representative to the UN will be chosen.
Hi!, my name is Dirk,
candidate Youth Representative to the United Nations.
I stand for the right to water, food and education for youth worldwide.
Why do I focus on these rights, why do I feel they are so important
and why do I want to spread them as UN Youth Representative?
That choice is based on my experiences in a Liberian refugee camp and at the University of Ghana.
For example with Blaise.
Blaise comes from Togo, and is a refugee.
During my stay in Ghana we became good friends.
Blaise can study because of a scholarship, but it is consequently paid too late.
At one point I discover that Blaise is so poor,
that he can only eat a little bit of rice a day.
Despite his passion to develop himself, it is impossible to build on his future.
This experience, and similar experiences in the refugee camp,
showed me that a focus on a single goal, for example education, cannot bring development.
I choose for water, food and education combined,
because specifically these needs are fundamental, for the development of youth like Blaise.
Water and food, to get through the day.
And education, to empower yourself with the skills that are needed to build your future.
It is youth who are hit disproportionately hard by insecurities in water, food and education.
Because youth are in an insecure phase of their lives, a phase of development.
The Netherlands can play a concrete and significant role in improvements in this field.
We are experts on water, and have a world-class agriculture university.
The UN is very important and the designated organisation to work on water, food and education worldwide,
to remove the greatest barriers to development.
Those barriers often start in the earliest years of life.
One out of four children below 5 years old, is undernourished.
That is why I choose for water, food and education.
Because they form the basis for development. Because Dutch youth can understand this thoroughly.
And because the United Nations and the Netherlands can make a significant difference for youth like Blaise.
Do you stand for... Then let’s go!
