Ever since Disney announced it had acquired LucasFilm and would be producing a new Star
Wars trilogy, rumors have been flying about who would direct Episode VII.
Now it appears we have our director, and it's someone who was previously rumored but then
JJ Abrams will direct Star Wars Episode VII. He has apparently been courted for months
by Kathleen Kennedy, the new head of LucasFilm.
Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline are all reporting that JJ Abrams has been
chosen. Just last month, Abrams specifically said
he was not going to do the film.
JJ, of course, created Lost, directed such films as Super 8 and Mission Impossible III,
and rebooted and directed two new Star Trek films.
So, yes, apparently the same man will be directing both Star Trek and Star Wars. Talk about a
disturbance in the force.
People have been so hungry for Star Wars news since the big announcement last fall that
it's been difficult to sort fact from fiction. Recent reports said Man of Steel director
Zack Snyder would be shooting a separate new Star Wars film based on Seven Samurai, but
Snyder's reps quickly shot down the rumor.
So it's good to finally have confirmation on who is directing Star Wars Episode VII.
Does this mean JJ's production company will have to change its name from Bad Robot to
Bad Droid?
