Shane: Hello. We're thrilled to have a special guest with us here at RID Headquarters today,
Debra Russell, who is the WASLI President - the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters.
She is President, but she has a number of other roles as well. She's one of the VIP
contributors to our book "Mentorship in Sign Language Interpreting." She is also a professor
at the University of Alberta. We're honored to have her here.
She came to talk with us about WASLI, and the importance of our role to influence the
world, as well as how the world influences us. It's really a great partnership that we have.
We're proud to have her as a leader; we look up to her awesome leadership, we watch her
Facebook page, and follow how her organization is making strides. We listen, and learn how
we can better support the growth of the worldwide deaf community.
Deb, welcome to RID.
Deb: Thank I'm so thrilled to be here at RID. It's been 25 years since I last visited, and
really WASLI really must extend thanks to RID for your leadership, your vision, your
commitment to the interpreting field, and your partnerships with the Deaf community.
Many of our country members look up to RID, so we thank you for your work. And thank you
for inviting me into your office, allowing me the opportunity to hear about your projects,
you have many exciting things happening.
Also, I want to advertise WASLI's conference - many of the members of RID are excited about
the prospect of traveling in July 2015 to Turkey. So, come join us!
Shane: We encourage you to go, it will be a great time, with opportunities to network
with other interpreters from all over the world. You'll be able to see what we have
in common, and what differences there are. It will be great. Our members are really excited
about supporting WASLI, we really care about what happens in the world. So, thank you for
your leadership, and we look forward to seeing continued growth in the future.
Deb: Thank you. I think we will continue to grow with support from national members like
RID. Thank you.
