Exciting news! YouTube is now supporting more formats of closed captions,
including the Scenarist Closed Caption SCC format.
The SCC format represents the line-21 captions,
which are really old, but also very standard.
So it's a good thing that they're supporting it,
but at the same time, it has some limitations.
The good news is that this is the first time that you actually format the captions
and place them on the screen where they go.
With all the other formats, they just get centered in the middle,
and you can't even put them in italics to emphasize a word.
So it's good that that's possible now, but it'd be nice
if they had focused on one of the other formats
that's newer and doesn't have those limitations.
The closed caption format divides up the screen
into 32 columns and 15 rows,
and each square can hold a character.
So this is a fixed-width font.
So there are three limitations to this format:
each line can only have a maximum of 32 characters,
it doesn't have full Unicode,
and since YouTube uses proportional fonts,
it has to somehow try to figure out what your intent wa━-
whether you wanted it centered or left-aligned or where it's going.
Coming up now, I'm going to try to do
all kinds of different things and see how YouTube handles it.
In the image, you'll see what I'm more or less expecting,
and turn on YouTube's closed captions and you will see what YouTube is actually doing.
And any anomalies that I find, I will put in the annotations.
Here we go.
