Telling Science by Mike Stein Barnkob
Hi my name is Mike. I study medicine. I am working on fighting cancer using the immune system.
Cancer arises when one of the many cells in the human body
begins to proliferate in an uncontrollable manner.
One sick cell becomes many.
The DNA of the cancer cells is unstable, making the cells mutate.
Some pass away, will the strongest survive.
The cancer cells create an tumor-microenvironment that helps protect them.
New blood vessels are formed.
The metabolism of the cancer cells changes.
Special signaling molecules help the tumor keep it self alive.
Fibers that protect the tumor is formed around the cancerous cells.
As the cells grow the tumor starts to disrupt the organ it grows in.
The immune system tries to control and remove the cancer cells.
Sadly the cancer cells learns to stop the immune system or become resistant to its attack.
We're trying to figure out the mechanisms the cancer cells
uses to avoid the immune system.
We're trying to convert this knowledge into new treatments.
One method we are using, involves inserting helper cells into the tumor
to tell the immune system which cells it should attack.
We also try and insert new genes into the immune system
to make it more efficient.
I hope you found the video interesting.
