Google makes us all hungry and Samsung makes us regret past phone purchasing decisions
and a new wearable computer. I’m Cali Lewis, welcome to Geek Beat 312
This episode of Geek Beat TV is brought to you by Carbonite.
Google and Samsung’s announcement has been highly anticipated, John P were live during
the announcement last night. So what was the big news? Well Google announced Ice Cream
Sandwich; the next generation of Android OS 4.0 and Samsung announced the first phone
with Ice Cream Sandwich, the Galaxy Nexus. It has a dual core processor with a 4.65 inch
HD super ??? screen. The resolution is 1280x720 with a contrast ratio of 100,000:1, not just
a thousand to one. And it will shoot 1080p video. As you can see from this video, it
has a contoured design; it’s Verizon LTE in the states and other carriers in Europe
and Asia and will be available in November. Ice Cream Sandwich has a few cool new features,
they’ve updated Gmail, it will have a menu bar at the bottom and give you a message preview.
And, you get to search your Gmail for the past 30 days while offline. Calendar has pinch
to zoom now, data usage charts are built in with a lot of analytics so you know which
apps are using the most data. They’ve added face unlock so your phone will only unlock
when you are looking at it. Just don’t change the way you look. Unfortunately when they
demo’d it, the phone crashed, I’m sure they will fix it before the release day. I
think my favorite things are the new cut and paste, find and replace and the new voice
prompts. There is a lot more including the beam feature so go check out blogger Leland
Flynn’s breakdown at geekbeat.tv/icecreamsandwich. I’m hungry for an ice cream sandwich now.
Anyway, what are your favorite features? Leave a comment and let me know.
If you are a FiOS user, you’ll like their new app, if you are on an Android at least.
My FiOS is the app and it will allow you to control your TV, your DVR and your home phone
directly from the app. And you will be able to watch certain content right on your phone
or tablet, I’m not sure yet what that means or which content will be available. It’s
a good move on Verizon’s part and IOS users will be able to take advantage of it before
the end of the year.
By the way, it’s happening more and more that businesses release Android apps before
IOS, it used to be the other way around, what’s happening here? As I was working on this show,
I realized something. I’m constantly hitting the save button, my finger is always reaching
for that command S. Do you do that? I guess that comes from having lost so much stuff
in the past and it happens so often to so many people and it is terrible. But Carbonite
actually goes a step further and backs up all your documents and photos automatically
so you don’t have to be paranoid, like me. Try it and let me know if you feel some peace
of mind at carbonite.com and by using the discount code geekbeat you’ll get a 15 day
free trial and 2 months free, and you’ll support the show.
A couple years ago when ?????? showed off his sixth sense, we got a taste of the possibility
of having access to a computer anytime, anywhere on any surface. Now we are seeing this idea
continue and even expand. Researches at Carnegie Mellon University are showing off the Omni-Touch,
it’s a camera and short range projector that will track a finger and display content
for you to interact with. It will even do pinch to zoom. LeLand also posted the whole
video at geekvideo.tv/omnitouch.
Alright, that is it for the day. If you have tips, send them to tips@geekbeat.tv. If you
have questions you want answered, send those to questions@geekbeat.tv and if you do a video
and send me a You Tube link to that question, I’ll send you two Livid Lobster lens pens,
special edition that can’t be bought. Questions@geekbeat.tv. Thanks so much for hanging out with me, I’m
Cali Lewis. Bye Bye.
Wow… I look good, yeah. Now you’re set. She’s our nerd, she’s a nerd, she was
in the movies and everything. Do you want me to start making fun of how you laugh?
