Let me congratulate you on the upcoming wedding. In the next two minutes, I want to give you
all the information you need to get your marriage license so theres no complications in the
courthouse or any drama on the day of your wedding because its invalid.
The first information I want to share with you is that it does require a Florida marriage
license to get married in the State of Florida. There are over 67 counties in the State of
Florida and hundreds of courthouses. Any one of those thats most convenient to you,
you can go to, to get your marriage license.
You do not have to get your marriage license within the same county in which youre getting
married. Use Google to find the ones closest to your location.
The second thing they want from you is your payment. They accept cash, money order or
credit cards or a combination of the three. But they do not accept checks.
And thirdly, they want some basic information to put on the marriage license. They of course
will need your social security number and also if youve been married before, theyre
going to need the date that your previous marriage was terminated either by death or
by divorce.
The next step is that the clerk is going to take all your information and transfer that
into the marriage license form. While theyre doing that, theyre going to give you a
pamphlet to read. Its about 16 pages long. It only takes about 10 minutes to read. Its
called The Florida Marriage Law Handbook.
When you get your marriage license back from the clerk, make sure you bring it with you
on the day of your wedding. Your wedding officiate will want to see that. They take it themselves,
usually process it and get it back to the courthouse. Usually it takes about 10 days
to get the marriage license back from the courthouse into your mailbox.
There are two very important time restrictions regarding a marriage license. The first of
which is the three-day wait. If either one of you is a Florida resident, theres an
automatic three-day wait before that marriage license becomes valid.
The second time restraint is that once the marriage license becomes valid, its a 60-day
window in which you can get married. You have to get married within that 60-day window.
So the bottom line is, dont get your marriage license too soon or too late. Its my hope
and prayer you have a great wedding but even a better marriage. Thank you.
