Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of Happy Bottles. I’m Emanuele Spagnuolo
and as usual I’m your wine pusher. Today we are going to taste a great wine from Langa,
we go back to my passion about old vintages, which made me found this company some years
ago. We are going to taste a Barolo Coste di Rose, so a cru, 1985 Marchesi di Barolo.
As you know, Marchesi di Barolo is a historical winemaker in Langa, one of the first winemakers with an incredible story,
they keep making wines which are very good also in the last years, wines for a global market
which can be found abroad, the winemaker has several vineyards in the area, they make different
wines, basic wines and also wines from cru (numbered bottles). This bottle is amazing,
I have opened it 3 hours ago and as I opened it I realized that the wine is at its highest
peak, so let’s taste it together and I hope you might be able to do it with me next time,
since we happen to meet here with a few friends from time to time.
1985 beautiful vintage in Langa, one of the best vintages, together with 1982 and 1989,
which are still the most important vintages. I tasted other 1985 bottles and I was always
happy about them, when the winemaker is good 1985 is always a very important harvest. The
wine in the glass has a very vivid color, it is bright, the wine looks lively, and the
evolution in the mouth and in the nose is very good. The color is ruby red, it is garnet
red on the sides, which is normal in a Barolo. The nose is the most interesting aspect, it
has an interesting complexity and it is a wine to discover through small details that
you can find with the nose. Fruits are certainly important, with some blackberry, red currant,
there is also flowers, very interesting, one can also smell the rose, just like the name
of the cru suggests, and at last there is a balsamic smell which I really like, and
I’d say it is eucalyptus. The wine is really really good. The nose and
the mouth are very well balanced, smell and taste correspond to one another, and this
is something not easy to find. In this case the nose is prevailing but then in the mouth
the wine is very elegant. Fruit is strong in the mouth, you can discover again the balsamic
aspect in the mouth, tannins in the wine is present but in a velvety way. The wine suggests
that the evolution can be long, so it could also improve in the next few years in terms
of details. A beautiful glass. This is really a high level Barolo, the ending is long and
important, a Barolo to taste in good company, a Barolo that makes you happy, as it expresses
life and joy but with a complexity that only a wine which is some years old can express.
I think it is still a very young wine, 95/100, Barolo Coste di Rose, 1985 Marchesi di Barolo:
dear friends, try and taste this wine. See you next time, thank you.
