I'm pleased to join with a number of quality Maine businesses
to sign the Working Together Pledge.
In doing so, the State of Maine continues to strive
to be a model employer of workers with disabilities.
We partner in the Working Together effort
with valued employers such as LL Bean, Time Warner Cable,
Unum, Stonewall Kitchen, RH Renny and others.
As signators, the State and other businesses of Working Together,
set an example for others by continuing our efforts
to hire qualified workers with disabilities.
This is an important effort for the State of Maine and for the businesses.
Employing people with disabilities just makes good business sense.
Together, we're taking steps to get ready for tomorrow's business landscape
by thinking creatively about Maine's workforce.
We're proactively engaging in a dialog about employing people with disabilities
and the importance of tapping into the underutilized source of a great employee.
Maine faces an unprecedented worker shortage in the coming years,
due in part to an aging workforce.
We have injured veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq
who need to be integrated into our workplace.
And, we need to diversify our workforce
so its reflective of our communities
and are ready to compete in a global marketplace.
The only way we're to stay ahead of the curve,
to stay agile and be prepared for tomorrow's business challenges.
