Hi all! I'm Paco Simone and I represent ARPANet, a small Italian company involved
in exploring the relation between Technology and Culture.
We are in Milano, this is Piazza del Duomo and that is Palazzo Reale.
We are in the Piazzetta Reale. In the next October, at Palazzo Reale a major
exhibition will take place to celebrate the Edict of Milan,
otherwise known as "Imperial Edict of Tolerance".
One thing is certain: the exhibition has captured the interest of all.
The great museums of the world have given their works, and we have built a very large
exhibition, with some rare works of art that allow us to take stock of the situation
in Milan in 313 AD, but also in the Empire.
So, today we are facing a great challenge:
to relate the roots of Western Culture
with our contemporaneity. To establish a strong link between the Past and the Present
in order to interpret the Future.
We believe in collective participation around a creative project that's part of each of us.
We proposed this project to Electa, organizer of the exhibition.
And the feedback has been very positive. The project was considered very attractive.
But that's not enough. We need the contribution of all of you to make the project come to life
and could tell, in the exhibition spaces, the small and big stories collected all over the world.
It was the year 313 AD, and Roman Emperor Constantine the First promulgated an Edict
that would go down in history. The Edict proclaimed religious freedom
for all faiths. It was shocking in its modernity, because every Roman citizen could freely practice
their beliefs. Its importance is in the fact that for the
first time introduced the inalienable principle of Tolerance.
Tolerance is respect for others and is behind every present democracy.
The theme of tolerance not only underlies all our exhibition and our present time,
but also takes on its real visibility in this multimedia wall,
where tolerance bounces back, gradually, to all those who wish to participate
And try to transfer the concept of tolerance (or intolerance) in our present.
This relationship with our contemporaneity is vital.
The challenge we want to share with you is to create a "metamedia installation".
A large digital wall in the exhibition, in which to tell the value of tolerance
expressed in a contemporary way.
This screen will be very significant in connecting people in real time,
and this seems like a very clear sign of our times and the ability we have
of communication (in that past times was a bit more complex).
A contest on Instagram, which will collect the images on the hashtag "#tolerance"
in the various languages of the world.
A collection of posts from Twitter, to tell the meaning of this principle, as set out
for the first time in 313 AD, and which is still present today.
The "metamedia installation" about tolerance will use an interface and interaction system
based on gestures and multitouch capabilities.
Everyone, from around the world, will help composing this extended metamedia installation.
And the posts will gradually appear on this map, providing a great overview on the concept
of tolerance and on small and big stories that happen everyday all over the planet.
This multimedia installation gives direction to the whole exhibition,
engaging in a worldwide debate
on one of the most important features of our civilization.
It is not only religious freedom. Tolerance applies to all human activities.
The human being must be free to do whatever conscience tells him.
An idea that can still be debated, that it is not always granted to all men,
but on which we believe we have to fight.
And then it's nice to think that contributions from all around the world get this initiative real!
Even with just a dollar. Each piece is part of a larger whole.
The names of those who contribute will daily flow
in the screens of metamedia installation.
The names of those who can contribute more
will be engraved in the pedestal of the screens.
I'm Antonio Batà , I work in ARPANet and I am producing, with my team,
some italian design products as perks to the donors of this campaign.
The main donors will be hosted in Milan or in Rome.
They will experience a special visit with the curators of the exhibition,
and an intriguing tour in the cradle of Western culture.
See you in Italy in October, but we need now your donations!
Time is short! Thank you, thank you so much everyone! Bye!
