What we saw was that a lot of people like Speed Dial,so we wanted to build a little bit on that
You don't necessarily look at this static page of just screenshots of web pages
We wanted to be something that could pull information from the Internet and provide it to you
Hey, I'm Arnstein, the product manager for Desktop Add-ons
and I'm Rich Tibbett, I'm the Architect in Extension Platform
And we're just going to do a few questions
I got a question from Zer0X from the Czech Republic
Why are you concentrating on Speed Dial when you could be improving other things
like performance, stability or hardware acceleration among other things?
It's a good and a fair question
The short answer is that we are working really *** performance, stability and fixing bugs
In the latest release of 11.50, we fixed thousands of bugs
We're fixing bugs faster than they're coming in, and we're fixing more bugs than we’ve ever had before
We've got teams dedicated to these tasks: stability, performance, and hardware acceleration
People are working actively everyday on these tasks
With the latest version we've got 15% performance increase on CSS and SVG
So 100% dedicated to that, but we have to keep moving forward, and we have to push out new technology
because people are asking for the performance increases, stability and bug fixes
But they're also asking for innovations, so we have to please both camps, and I think we're doing that quite well
Getting a lot of good feedback on the latest version of Opera. It's looking great
Okay, the second question is from Tiago Wakabayashi from Brazil
Do you think it will be possible in the future for us to have interaction in our Speed Dial?
It would be amazing if we could play some games, control our music and even add some shortcuts in that space
It's a good question. We get this question a lot since our release of 11.50. We've got multiple people asking the same question
The answer is we're looking into it. We wanted to keep it simple in the first instance
Getting this out the door, keep it simple, don't compromise on Speed Dial
which on the moment is one-click to access your favorite website
and just enable developers to display extra content as a part of an extension
We got that question a lot but if you allow every Speed Dial to grab mass focus
- That could become very messy very quickly - It could become messy absolutely
One thing that a lot of people don’t know is that when you click an Speed Dial extension
You don't have to go to a website, you can go to a local file
A good example of that is Pipe Mania which does exactly that
So it shows the high score inside the Speed Dial. You click on it and that's just locally rendered page
Of course as you're looking at the Speed Dial the link that it's linking to can change dynamically
So if there's multiple news stories, you can link to that story directly when needed which is the current interaction model
But we are exploring that, and we'll see what future has for this feature
All right, thanks for watching this episode of Tech Break
We didn't get through all of the questions, but I hope we answered the ones we got well. We do keep an eye on the forums?
Absolutely, we're on there, we're looking at all your suggestions and feedback
and trying to make Opera extensions even better in the future with your participation. So it's really great
and stay tuned for next version of Tech Break
Next "version"?
People out there, developers, are making awesome extensions. So we're just facilitating
So well done to you guys
KEEPIN' AWESOME!
