In October of 2010, the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health care Center will stand up
as a first-of-its-kind partnership between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the
Department of Defense, integrating all medical care into a single, fully-integrated federal
healthcare facility with one, combined mission.
Located in North Chicago, Illinois, the arrangement incorporates facilities and services
from both the North Chicago VA Medical Center and the Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes,
meaning that military and federal civilian staff will be working side-by-side.
The merger is being accomplished in three phases and is named in honor of the famous
Apollo 13 astronaut and retired Navy officer, Captain James A. Lovell.
[Lovell's voice: "Ah, Houston, we've had a problem.]
Nowhere else in the nation is there such a relationship between the VA and the DoD.
