Your critical path on a construction project, similar to how we control cost on a project
goes on way before construction. We need to consider to critical path of construction
before we even begin engineering. For example, if we have a project, or a portion of a project
that involves any kind of significant structural steel; structural steel has anywhere from
8 to 14 weeks for delivery once the construction diagrams are generated. So, we want to jump
on those structural steel drawings as early as possible. If there are pieces of equipment
that are supported by that structural steel, we need to make sure that equipment is specified
early and procured early so we can get the drawings that are going to be the basis of
the steel design. That requires that the P & IDs that represent that equipment are complete
and that requires that the mass balance that the P & IDs are based on are complete. So,
in order to begin on the right aspects of the engineering to support the construction
schedule, we need to understand the construction schedule so we can prioritize the right engineering
functions.
