Jesus told us, in no uncertain words that, "Heaven and earth
shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
(Matthew 24:35). That is a mighty powerful statement and
one we ought to consider carefully as we view creation
about us. St. Peter talks about the coming event when all of
creation disappears and we have only the sure Word of God, the
Bible. Listen to him, "But the day of the Lord will come as a
thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with
a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the
earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned."
(II Peter 3:10). That means that the only SURE thing we have is
God's Word. Everything, and I mean everything, revolves
around the Bible. It is the starting point from which all of
creation operates. It is the plumb line that shows us what is right
and what is wrong, what is eternal and what is temporal.
David Roper makes the point so well. He writes:"
In 1867, four years after Idaho was organized as a
territory, Lafayette Cartee, the Surveyor General of the
United States, commissioned Peter Bell
to survey the new territory. Bell took a sledge and drove
a brass post into a little *** on the summit of that
butte, declaring it to be the initial point from which he
began his survey. The survey established
the language of land description in Idaho:
Townships are designated north and south of the
initial point; ranges are designated east and west.
With such descriptions, you always know exactly
where you are. So it is, the Word of God, the
Bible, is our "initial point" so that all we believe originates with the
Bible. It is the measuring point, the plumb line, for all we preach
and teach. We thank God we have such a sure foundation in
the Bible. All things are going to change and vanish—Heaven and
Earth shall pass away, but the Word of God endures forever.
Our thanks to God for that.
