Hello 11th District shipmates. I just left an all hands where I congratulated the winning teams in our 2011 District Commander's fitness challenge.
Over 600 of us from San Diego to Crescent City, participated in the challenge, working in four-person teams
to earn mileage credit for doing all types of physical fitness activities
and virtually "running" around the roughly 2,900 mile perimeter of the 11th District.
As we saw from the photos and videos sent in by some of the teams, everyone had a great time.
The overall total number of mileage credit earned by all the teams was 226,223.
The winners of this year's challenge were:
3rd place, The Mile Merkers
2nd place, Dragging Anchor
1st place for the second year in a row, The Nautical Miles
consisting of team members LT Daniel Twomey, Brian Aldrich, CWO Danny Kilburger, and Mike VanHouten
I would be willing to bet we are probably the oldest team with a combined aged of over 200 years.
Another component of this year's competition included the team with the best photo submission.
It was great to see many of the teams' send in photos of what they were doing,
but Self-propelled Semi-fit (SPFS) took home the photo prize.
I encourage you to take a look at many of the teams' photos.
It may sound cliché, but I truly feel that everyone who participated in this challenge is a winner.
You owe it to yourself, your shipmates, your family and the American public to stay in shape so you can do your safely, effectively and reliably.
If you are already in the habit of exercising, don't quit, keep it up.
If you aren't in good condition, or have any sort of medical issues, check with your doctor to get their advice on an exercise plan.
Then you can dig those running shoes, oil up that bike, or just start taking your dog on longer walks
and stop sweating the annual weigh-ins.
Congratulations again to our winning teams, and thanks to everyone who took part in this fun and rewarding challenge.
And please remember that my personal motto applies to your work life, your personal life, and your fitness life as well.
I look forward to doing it with again next year.
Be safe, get the job done, and have fun. Semper Paratus!
