In this month's Back to Work bulletin: The office of National Statistics has announced
that UK unemployment has fallen by 4,000 over the last 3 months and that private sector
jobs have reached an all time record high. The unemployment rate however still remains
unchanged at 7.8% following an increase in the size of the UK workforce which has almost
matched employment. The Bank of England has said Interest rates
will not go up until unemployment has fallen below 7.0% which has been predicted for around
2016.
According to the CIPD, things are starting to look up as it found that over the last
quarter more employers are expecting to hire new staff, and fewer are expecting to make
redundancies.
Mc Donald's has admitted that 90% of its UK workforce are on zero hour contracts; a controversial
revelation following the recent legal action of a former employee on Sports Direct for
the same practise. A spokeswoman for Mc Donalds has said "We
never ask people to be 'on call'... Many of our employees are parents or students who
are looking to fit flexible, 'paid work' around childcare, study and other commitments."
A leading recruitment company has found that 2 thirds of Britain's financial services firms
have raised salaries in a response to the EU's planned introduction of caps on bonuses.
From January bonuses are to be capped at 100% of base salary or 200% with special permission
from shareholders. The recruitment company found that 65% of UK financial services have
increased base salary of their best performers by an average of 20%.
Npower has announced plans to reduce 26 UK sites down to 10 over the next 5 years in
a bid to cut costs; this is set to cause uncertainty among its employees. Npower currently employ
10,000 people in the UK. Chief executive of Npower Paul Massara has said that Npower would
avoid compulsory redundancies wherever possible but the company is in need of major change
and some of these would be difficult.
Jaguar Land Rover could potentially create 1,000 new jobs with its planned expansion
of its Halewood factory in South Liverpool. They have experienced a very successful year
so far largely due to demand from China.
According to the Sunday Times leaked confidential memos suggest the army reserves recruitment
drive could miss target with only a quarter of their goals being met over the past three
months. The Government wants to expand the reserve
force to 30,000 by 2018 to support the regular army which has incurred cuts.
