dW: Scott Laningham with developerWorks here with Jim Shields, recent college graduate.
Hey Jim.
Jim: Hey, how ya doing?
dW: Can you talk about how you use developerWorks?
Jim: Sure. Yeah, I've been using developerWorks to try and learn the Java programming language.
I'm sort of unfamilar with the language that I've been using ... the articles, the tutorials,
and the massive technical library they have at developerWorks to try and learn; it's a
great resource for a beginner.
dW: Cool. Now, what about particular stuff on the site, other than that, that appeals
to you right now?
Jim: Well, they just launched this new social network called My developerWorks ...
dW: Yeah ...
Jim: ... on developerWorks so you can go past, you can now login to this network and go past
the limitations of just reading articles and reading tutorials and you can connect with
other people that have like-minded interests and collaborate with other people to facilitate
the learning process. So in my example, I'd search out for other people who blog about
Java or who have groups about Java and meet with these people and see if I can get their
assistance to learn how to write it.
dW: Yeah. So you're actually finding it useful in that way, with the networking and everything?
Jim: Yeah, absolutely. It's extremely helpful ... like I said before, it really facilitates
the learning process.
dW: Cool. So your recommendation for your fellow recent grads and current students here,
what would you say to them about developerWorks?
Jim: Well if you haven't used developerWorks in the past, you should. And after getting
involved, you should become involved in My developerWorks, the social network, and collaborate
with people. It's like Facebook for developers; it's kinda fun actually.
dW: Great. Cool. Jim Shields, talking about developerWorks. Thanks Jim.
Jim: Thanks.
