What can happen if you eat raw cookie dough?
You could be eating raw eggs as part of that cookie dough mix. And then you end up getting
salmonella.
Which means getting food poisoning.
There are a number of bacteria that would cause symptoms we consider food poisoning.
But all of them cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and some combination thereof.
Delhi belly or the Hershey squirts, they call it in the UK.
It is easy to make fun of today, with modern plumbing and pepto-bismol and Imodium and
even IV bags. But food poisoning used to kill a lot of people.
It can kill the very old and very weak today.
IV bags were massive innovations, keeping people who could not drink from dying of dehydration.
I don’t think I’ve ever been that sick.
But you don’t take food poisoning lightly if you think it could actually kill you.
Raw cookie dough tastes so very good. It’s tempting.
So buy cookie dough flavored ice cream or candy. You’ll enjoy it as it melts in your
mouth without melting your guts.
You make it sound like an equally good replacement for raw cookie dough.
Or just make the cookies and be careful not to over-cook them. Eat them when they are
still warm and melty but no toxic for you.
It is a pity that they really don’t have a really good substitute.
So make vegetarian based cookie dough that uses vegetarian egg replacements. Then the
cookie dough can’t carry salmonella.
What about the milk used?
Milk in freshly made cookie dough doesn’t make you severely ill. It is the eggs that
are so dangerous.
Because they come out the same hole chickens use to poop.
Something like that. But you don’t have to get sick like that, given all the alternatives.
