[TICKING CLOCK]
My name is Chilin Shih. I am a linguist.
I am associated with the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures,
the Department of Linguistics,
as well as the Beckman Institute.
I am the director of the Speech Dynamics Lab, where I use the
electromagnetic articulograph to track people's articulatory movements.
That is we are studying how people speak.
The articulograph, or EMA, uses sensors to track speech movements.
With this information, we can identify the characteristic patterns of
different speech communities, as well as different speech corpora.
For example, we can study the difference between native speakers and accented speech
and identify when accented speech can be improved to simulate the process, speed,
and efficiency of native speakers.
