A textile company in Esposende (Portugal) has begun marketing
reusable underwear for urinary incontinence
The materials used absorb urine and eliminate odours.
This clothing has been approved by INFARMED and is already on sale.
PORTUGUESE INNOVATION
At first glance, they appear to be like all the others, but they aren’t.
These take care of the main problems
of those who suffer from slight incontinence (leakage of urine)
This is innovative because in fact, the raw material used
completely eliminates odour
and has a high capacity for absorption
if there is light incontinence, which is acceptable.
Then it has a waterproof layer on the outside and at the sides
that prevents the wetness from passing through to other clothing.
They absorb urine, leaving the skin dry and neutralising odours.
The technology was developed by the Office of Innovation at Impetus
with the coordination of the University of Minho (Portugal)
Using technology, we developed a fibre-based structure that
besides being extremely comfortable
and able to be worn as a normal boxer or briefs
it also is able to neutralise odours from urine
caused by ammonia
At the same time it gives the user a sense of security
because there is no flow of urine if there is leakage during the day
plus, the comfort it gives is marvellous, because it is worn just like any normal pair of underwear.
They are washable and give a quality of life back to those who suffer from slight incontinence
The underwear was tested over a period of 6 months and those who try them come back to buy more
And unlike other products of this kind, ours has been certified by INFARMED
as a medical device, and it is therefore guaranteed under European Community norms
to not cause a reaction or other problems to users.
The company is now studying the possibility of increasing the absorption capacity.
Women’s underwear, boxers, briefs and swimming trunks are already on sale
