Epic Journey The Making of Alienware Notebooks
Neil Hand: We spent a lot of time and effort really understanding what a gamer really needs.
We take care of the technology, they win the game.
Frank Azor: We used to have LAN parties at the office where we would wagon in our
CRT monitors that would weigh 100 pounds. So we started thinking there’s
got to be an easier way.
We started working with companies like ATI, at the time, and NVIDIA, helping to
pioneer notebook high-performance graphics.
Neil Hand: Gamers are the most passionate customers we have and we believe in making sure that we’re
hitting what those costumers want.
Claudina Lopez: We have gamers from all over the world interacting with us through our property
Alienware Arena. We’ve been at PAX Prime, Tokyo Game Show… so there’s been different
events throughout the world that our customers and fans have been able to experience the hardware.
Fleming Seay: We’ll also actively recruit folks to come into the lab where we do analysis of our design
to show them different things, to get their feedback.
Frank Azor: We have continuously, over time, evolved our industrial design from a more retro Roswell
look to a lot more of what we see in sci-fi today. When you look at what we’re introducing now,
this is what we see the future looking like. Not five years from now – 50 years from now,
a hundred years from now.
Brian Leonard: We spent a lot of time with our engineering counterparts working on the aluminum
A-cover. There are some processes that we developed especially to create that part. It’s really the
centerpiece of that design and of the product line.
Fleming Seay: Just like any design process, you start with what do you need to know –
what is the design space – and, for us, it’s performance gaming computing.
Brian Leonard: Once we understand experiences, we understand the customer, we started taking the best
of everything that’s happening and fusing it into the one perfect solution. Because, at the end of
the day, we didn’t want to make a choice between A, B, or C, we laid the final design on the table,
there was no question – that’s the one that we need.
