Elana Siu (Reporter): We are reporting from St Lucia, where international students are
volunteering to help the victims of the Qld floods. Even though they are far away from
their families, there is a real sense of community here as they work together to help local Brisbane
residents. Christine Yeung (Volunteer): Our church, from
Hope Brisbane, we started volunteering on Saturday. So that was our first round of volunteering,
I think it was from 10 o’clock in the morning until six or seven.
Elana Siu: There are around twenty student volunteering teams, each with up to six volunteers.
Most of the volunteers are international students from around the world that study nearby at
the University of Qld. Christine Yeung: From Chile, from Singapore,
from Hong Kong, one from America, so it’s all from different places around the world.
St Lucia Volunteer: We were just looking for somebody to help. We were walking around the
streets and we found these guys. We decided to come in and ask if they needed help.
Elana Siu: Thanks to the volunteers work, the majority of the flooded houses in St Lucia
have been cleaned up in only one week, with only a handful of houses left in need of assistance.
Those affected by the floods express their gratitude to the volunteers for their help.
Rick Greene (Property Owner’s son): I saw the newspaper headlines about 50,000 volunteers
- I couldn’t believe it. To experience firsthand – I just think it is amazing and you know
people came here with a broom and a shovel and clean and they went home filthy. They
were covered in mud and I just thought want a fantastic gesture. So, look, a lot of people
will be grateful and appreciative of the volunteers and from myself and my mum thank you very
much. Elana Siu: Elana Siu, Volunteering Qld TV
