My name is Lazar Toderita, I am from Barcea. From 2004 to 2008 I was elected to represent the community of Roma in Podoleni.
During my mandate, through the law number 430, “Improving the situation of the Roma”, I promoted school mediators, sanitary mediators and professors of Romani language.
I also implemented other projects that were no longer applicable when the local government was re-elected.
The village of Podoleni is a community of hard-working and peaceful Roma.
One problem they face is that they live in an area in danger of flooding, and therefore they do not have legal authorisations for their houses.
So they live in Podoleni, but have no legal papers. They cannot get these papers, as they live in an area in danger of flooding.
This is very problematic, as some people worked abroad, came back and built beautiful houses, but they have no legal documents.
I struggled to get these papers done, yet it was not possible as houses are in an area in danger of flooding.
I struggled very much for the integration of the Roma, I implemented these projects so they can be integrated also in schools, to help them.
During my mandate we opened a kindergarten, a school, for the Roma here in Podoleni.
There are almost 90 kids at the kindergarten.
I also brought electricity, which was lacking since people did not have papers for their houses, and with a simple declaration they obtained electricity.
We set up the electricity network with bulbs in the Romani community.
I am proud of these accomplishments. We also set up a Bureau for the Roma, so that we can talk to them, to hold meetings.
I was also involved in the Local Council, helping the Roma. For instance, the Roma who did not have identity papers,
I helped them to register and obtain these papers.
Yet there is more to be done for the Roma who do not have a job. You cannot be a member of this society if you do not have a job.
Another achievement is that we have managed to obtain agreements for opening a new dispensary, for children that need to walk in the rain and the cold to get a vaccine done.
Like this we avoid having mothers walking for 3 to 6 kilometres with a 3-months old child in their arms.
Therefore apart from the kindergarten, we will also have a dispensary so that the doctor can come closer in the village,
and mothers won’t have to go by foot with their children for 6 kilometres.
Therefore the opening of the dispensary is an important step forward, done with the support of the Local Council, the mayor and the vice-mayor.
We have a councillor there, mister Ilinca Florin who is now representing the Roma and their problems.
We also have an expert for the Roma, mister Marcel Caluian.
But we should promote more the youths of our community, so that they can also have a say in community matters, to support children in schools.
We took initiative of our own accord and managed to be heard by the local authorities, we never created problems.
Therefore we are loved and respected.
I always wanted total discipline for the Roma, what you give is what you get. If you respect someone, he cannot treat you badly.
So my interest is that we promote this discipline, so that Roma citizens can give a better example even for the majority population.
