Lovefilm: for those that love films, and can’t be bothered to go and walk to Blockbusters
to rent a DVD, or pay a decent whack to have the movie downloaded from the likes of iTunes,
or doesn’t believe in illegal downloading. A specific market, you’d think, but a popular
one. And now, there’s an iPad app, and it makes for a pretty compelling reason to Subscribe.
£5.99 subscribers to the postal film rental service can watch any of the films, and there
really is a good selection available. You can browse by picks of the week, most popular
and genres, among others and the selection is pretty good, including relatively recent
movies such as A Single Man and The Road. The quality is excellent, and my would-be
favourite feature is that if you’ve got an Apple TV you should be able to stream them
all to your telly – except that when I tried, I could only get the sound to play on the
TV - something people in various forums have also complained of. Weirdly, you can also
choose to add streamable films to your rental list and get them posted out to you, I guess
in case you find the instantaneous nature of streaming too much for you, although you
still need the separate main LoveFilm app to manage that list properly. Odd. But free.
If you don’t include the £6 monthly subscription.
