This building is one of the only ones where you can see the original situation in a KGB
Prison. After the Second World War, the KGB used it as a prison for thousands of people.
In the first step, Germans... but Russian people... and Polish people...and people from
other countries.
The prison has many isolation cells and this is one of them. One woman, she had to be here
for seven months in this isolation cell. She was waiting for her trial. This is a standing
cell. The prisoners had to spend two, three, five hours or maximum two days, and the big
problem was that there was no fresh air. And so they became breathless...and other things...
No food. No water... You can find a lot of inscriptions, you find names...like this one.
Elizabeth Reich. She lived in Berlin, Panko...and she was 20 years old... During our research,
we were able to find Elizabeth, and get a lot of material, photos, documents...and she
told us her story... So, there are a lot of other names...over there...you can find the
name from a Harold...sentenced to death on June 15...and now we can tell the visitor
the story... And you have here a painting, this is an icon of the prison, it shows a
prisoner here in the prison... we don't know his name... and I think it has become an icon...
Now, we prepare the permanent exhibition, make our research further, and we are interested
in documents, photos, and we want to know more about the people and so we have a lot
to do... and it is very interesting work...
