In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to work a fair isle cap, which is both a lesson
in working fair isle, which is two-color knitting, and working a hat in-the-round and on double-pointed
needles – on circular needles and double points.
If you’d like to use the pattern that we’re using, you can jump over to verypink.com and
buy and download the pattern, or you can use these videos to follow along for any pattern
that you’re using to knit a cap or fair isle knitting.
And this is the cap that we’re going to knit.
It has – the pattern has two sizes, for an adult, or for a baby.
And the two color work that we’re doing is this traditional Norwegian snowflake pattern,
which you often see on Norwegian sweaters, kind of across the top here like this.
And not only is it pretty, but the two color knitting is actually really functional.
Because it creates a double thick fabric everywhere that the pattern is.
Usually you’ll see the snowflake pattern, or what’s called lice pattern, all the way
through the whole sweater, making the whole sweater double thick, and appropriate for
skiing in Norway. I guess.
Okay, to get started, you will want to of course decide if you want to do an adult or
a baby hat, and get your needles and yarn ready, and cast on the number of stitches
for the size that you’re doing.
Okay, so I have cast on stitches enough for a baby hat here.
And the first thing I need to show you how to do is to join this in the round, to start
knitting the cuff of the hat.
Let me go ahead and show you this, we’re working the cuff of the hat in 2 by 2 rib.
So, to do this, the first thing that you’re going to need is a stitch marker.
You want to put that on the left needle where your working yarn is.
Now, this is going to be the first stitch that I knit.
And when I use this working yarn to knit this stitch, I’m going to join it in the round.
And the first thing I want to do, of course, is to make sure that none of this is twisted,
all of the knots are lined up on the inside of the work like this.
So, I’m going to get my working yarn ready, my stitch marker’s ready, my first stitch
is at the end of the needle, nothing’s twisted, so much to think about.
Here we go.
This is 2 by 2 rib, so I’m going to knit the first two stitches, and *** ***! Look
at us. We’re joined in the round now.
Now the most important thing with working 2 by 2 rib is after you knit, you need to
yarn forward to purl the next two.
And then yarn back to knit the next 2.
Yarn forward and purl.
And the cast on row is always kind of tight, you can see that I’m struggling with these
short needles.
And yarn back to knit.
And depending on the size that you’re doing, you’re either going to knit the 2 by 2 rib
for 1 or 2 inches.
And then you will knit a few additional rows before we get started on the color pattern,
and that’s what we’ll cover in the next video.
